The Spider Tank - Is LEGO Star Wars Overpriced?

Writer: FraseFrase

To those unaware, mid-last year the LEGO Group increased the prices of sets by 10% across the board for all recent and upcoming sets. This has resulted in some eye-gouging prices for some sets, notably the 4+ AT-ST at just 87 pieces for $50 AUD, which now has a 2.5 star rating on LEGO.com.au, one of the lowest ratings in the current LEGO Star Wars theme lineup.

Leaked a few days ago (we sent this to our subscribers first) was the LEGO Star Wars The Spider Tank set, featuring a large spider droid, Din Djarin, Grogu and Bo Katan. As you can see from the below image, the set appears to be medium-sized, with the droid taking up the majority of the build. Just looking at it, we would've guessed it would be between $50 and $60.

Clearly we were too optimistic though, because this set will set you back $85 if you buy it direct from LEGO on the 1st of August.

There are a few notable things to cover in the set. First of all, we're getting a new Darksaber blade - while the hilt will remain the same as regular lightsaber hilts despite being rectangular, the blade is finally being changed to closer resemble how the Darksaber actually looks. While it's good that they've changed the blade, it's still a poor design and would've been much better received by the community had LEGO either custom molded an entire piece to be the Darksaber, or put more effort into changing the hilt.

While the Darksaber isn't much of an improvement over the previous iteration we saw in the 75315 Imperial Light Cruiser set, the Bo Katan minifigure is certainly well received. Featuring printed arms and two pistols, they also included a new Karen hairpiece.

The previous iteration of Bo Katan that we saw in the Mandalorian Starfighter came with a darker coloured helmet and no printing on the arms, so this figure has evidently had some more effort put into it and will be desired by fans.

Ultimately, we wouldn't suggest picking this set up on day 1. Head down to Kmart or another retailer to check if the price is cheaper there, or hold out for a sale if you want to pick this up.
