LSW Set of the Week 19/6/23: MTT - 7662 (2009)

Welcome back to another set of the week for LEGO Star Wars! This week we're going to continue the 2009 golden era theme with the MTT set numbered 7662. Released in December 2008, with a lifespan of 14 months. It was priced at the very reasonable AUD $143.99, which when looking at modern sets that can be bought for an equivalent price, this set was an absolute dream to own, and very affordable with 21 minifigures.

Released during the aforementioned golden age of Confederacy vehicles, the Multi-Troop Transport (MTT) was the main way that the Trade Federation would transport their venerable battle droids. The brown colour scheme was never updated within LEGO to the dark blue that would become well known in LEGO Star Wars sets. Their first appearance in the films was during Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace, during the Battle of Naboo.

Similarly to the AAT, this set was part a wave of LEGO releasing a variety of other CIS vehicles as well, with the Corporate Alliance Tank Droid (7748) and the Hyena Droid Bomber (8016) providing ground and air support respectively to the advancing droid armies of CIS fans in 2009.

The minifigures in this set were pretty stock standard, with 16 B1 battle droids, 2 blue security B1 battle droids, 2 red pilot B1 droids and one droideka. This droideka is now worth an absolute fortune due to the unique copper plated pieces that made up the figure, causing the figure to be worth over AUD $100 now.

Similarly to the AAT, this set is quite rare, and a must have for Trade Federation army builders. However, those still wanting a MTT have a few options, including the quite abysmal 2000 MTT, set number 7184. The re-release of this set in 2014, which was also not as good looking, set number 75058, can also be used as a substitute.

Again, lets look at the reception the set had on release from EuroBricks:

Overall Score: 9.1, an excellent set. You get a huge tank, a great transport, 20 great figs, and a clever droidika all for only $100. I highly recommend this to any Lego fan, as it is great for parts as well.

Nowadays, this set is quite rare to find in any condition, with no sets being available across Oceania, and globally few sealed sets are for sale on BrickLink. However, for the avid CIS vehicle collector, or army builder, one can't go wrong having a classic such as this battling it out against the Republic forces, likely supported by a set that has now achieved "white whale" status, the Republic Dropship w/ AT-OT (10195).

Personally, I have this set and rebuilt it out of a bulk lot, and its an incredibly satisfying build. The instructions have you build the set from the base upwards, with nice greebling, as well as technics parts that allow the front to open and draw out the iconic battle droid carrier that can can deploy the droids.

Eh? A real play-set orientated Confederacy vehicle. (Source: LEGO.com)

Financial Info (Source: BrickEconomy):

The current value for a new and sealed Trade Federation MTT is estimated around A$1,395 today with current average yearly gain of about 12% but will level off in the next year closer to a 9% annual growth making it a solid investment. On the open market, a used set will fetch in the range of between A$432 and A$571 depending on the condition.

As I've said before, this set is an example of the quality and care that LEGO can give to Star Wars sets, and represents a golden age of LSW in general. Hopefully, LEGO will appreciate the demand for CIS vehicles and sets, and give us some more modern sets to pit against our heroes and friends in the current lineup of Republic sets.

I literally just sold this set last week, for $400 cash!

the Droideka was a replacement - not the Copper pieces one - but it was otherwise complete and in excellent condition.

considering I got it for $80 in 2021, then spent about $25 on missing parts, I’m pretty stoked!

a beautiful set that I was sad to see go, but money talks.

The droideka is that collectable?! I had no idea. I don't own this set, but that's very interesting because of unique coloring the droid fetches such a premium.

My brother had one of these sets, I think it's still at my parent's house, will go hunting when I'm there next!

I have this set on the shelf behind me! I remember seeing it in stores with my cousin back in 2008 and wanting it bad. Eventually we both got it for Christmas that year! Only downside for me is the droid leg connectors have gotten quite loose over the years so half of them won't stand upright. An excellent build!
