Is This LEGO's Biggest Rip-Off Of 2025?

It's no secret that LEGO's reputation for being greedy has become more egregious over recent years. Unprecedented price hikes despite a noticeable downgrade in quality across multiple themes have left many fans disappointed and exhausted. Ask any serious collector nowadays what the hardest part of being a LEGO fan is, and the response will most likely be "It's a very expensive hobby."

On the bright side, when making purchases directly through LEGO's official website, you can earn "Insider Points" which are equal to 5% of the purchase cost for each order you make. These points can be used to redeem cool rewards on LEGO's website. Sounds sweet, right?

Think again.

While points can be used towards future purchases, 5% of the purchase price is not a good value when many third-party retailers often have sales where sets can be discounted for 10%, 20%, 30% and sometimes even higher. Even a triple Insider Points event on LEGO.com just gives back a measly 15% in value - and those events are rare. This is where LEGO's recent announcement comes in.

LEGO has announced that members of their Insider program can redeem 5000 points for... a poster. That's right - they want you to redeem a whopping 5000 points for a large poster of their Death Star set. In case you're wondering how much 5000 points is worth, that's approximately $1111 in Australia - so this poster would cost you more points than what you would earn buying the $1000 Eiffel Tower.

I love LEGO as a product - the building bricks, the cool sets, the amazing fan creations. But asking for customers to pay $1111 or more just so they can redeem a poster is ridiculous. Not to mention it sounds even more scummy when you realise that you have to earn the points by spending $1111 or more, but then place another order to redeem the poster.

By the way, other items you can redeem your points on includes the "LEGO Botanicals Butterfly Garden" with 150 pieces for 1500 points. That's more than 3 times cheaper than this poster, meaning LEGO likely could've given us a 450 pieces LEGO Star Wars set for the same amount of points, but opted to offer us a poster instead.

If you want to make the most out of your Insider Points, do yourself a favour - use them to redeem a direct discount on your next LEGO order or get a promotional set. Don't waste $1111 AUD worth of points on a poster. And maybe look elsewhere to buy your LEGO rather than directly from the company, because I haven't seen good Insider Points deals in years.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this offer, so comment down below what you think of the poster. Was I too brutal or harsh judging this? Let me know!

Biggest ripoff, so far…

Was really looking forward to this one when it was first announced, but now I’m on the fence and will likely wait for a sale before I buy….

I was stunned and sadly not stunned to see the audacity of ebay sellers listing a pre-order of the Death Star Poster for at least $100 recently. A free market and its participants will decide what succeeds and fails, but IMO this type of corporate buzz promoted by Lego is getting out of control and feeding directly to the scalpers.

Normally I'd try to pick up a few new lego sets on Oct 1st, but the prices of nearly everything are crazy on Lego.com , the GWPs laughable. I'm not even sure the rumored double VIP around the middle of Oct will sway me. Amazon will have a prime day deal on the 7-8th Oct so best to wait and…

Yes and it's not only the scalpers who have ruined the fun, although they have their assigned seat at the blame table for Lego. I'm mentally worn out by the LAN folks and influencers (the youtube ones) who have created a subculture of unadulterated buying sprees at the Lego stores or online, who act like buying a few hundred dollar set is a casual thing to do every week. No it's not and that's a financially dangerous and deceitful image to sell.

Lego has reached a point of being some of the least accessible toy products ever to the masses. 2025 has been a good exposure year of the LAN members who receive their sets for free and yet clai…
