The January 2023 LEGO City lineup looks interesting to say the least. With new molds, some interesting new buildings and vehicles and plenty of variety, there are a lot of options in terms of choice... but not necessarily in terms of price.
In this post, we'll cover the top 5 LEGO City sets in terms of design. We won't be taking into account prices in our picks though, as our list would otherwise be completely different. Don't forget to check our honorable mentions at the bottom of the post!
5. 60369 LEGO Mobile Police Dog Training

Starting off the list, we have the Mobile Police Dog Training set. At $33 AUD, this set is actually quite good for the price. Offering two minifigures - including one police officer in a safety suit, something brand new and unique - plus a police dog and police puppy, this set comes with loads of play options for kids, but also offers a lot for MOC builders looking for new and unique features to add to their cities. This set is well-rounded and offers something for both kids and adults alike.
4. 60386 LEGO Recycling Truck

While we've had numerous garbage trucks and recycling trucks over the years, this build actually features two different recycle workers instead of the usual single minifigure, plus a random civilian to (hopefully) recycle responsibly. As always, there's an opening on the truck to fill and empty it.
Taking a closer look at the set, it also comes with a green baseplate that is compatible with the LEGO City Roadplates. This would be a welcome addition to anyone looking to further expand their LEGO City MOC, or just for kids to have some fun with.
The one downside to this set is the pricetag at a whopping $60. Yes, this can be quite a setback for many consumers, who on first glance would expect this set to be between $35-$45, or $50 at most.
3. 60389 LEGO Custom Car Garage

Awesome. That word basically sums up this set in one go for LEGO car enthusiasts. With multiple customisation options interchangeable for each car, two mechanics and two racers, this is a very unique and welcome addition to LEGO city. What you see in the images above is what you get.
This set will retail for $80 AUD. It's a bit steep, so we'd recommend keeping an eye out for sales down the track.
2. 60371 LEGO Emergency Vehicles HQ

While it can get tiring getting the same old police stations, fire stations and hospitals over and over every few years, this set is a bit different. Featuring a police car, an ambulance and a fire and rescue helicopter, this set really has it all. And rejoice - it comes with a crook, a tree on fire and a citizen to treat for injuries, providing plenty of play for kids and a reasonable HQ building.
This set will retail for exactly $100 AUD.
1. 60372 LEGO Police Training Academy

This set is certainly a welcome surprise for any City fans, and definitely something on the wishlists of many kids who feast their eyes on it. The Police Training Academy includes 6 minifigures, a horse, an ATV and an obstacle course consisting of a climbing wall, monkey bars and a zipline. This set tops our list with loads of different playfeatures and inspiring builds that pair very well with LEGO City police stations.
This set will retail at a steep $140, however it certainly includes a lot of features and has 823 pieces.
That wraps up our list for the top 5 LEGO City sets in the January 2023 wave. For the full list, head to LEGO's official website. And see our honorable mentions below!
60388 LEGO Gaming Tournament Truck

60384 LEGO Penguin Slushy Van

60383 LEGO Electric Sports Car

60382 LEGO Vet Van Rescue

... Ok so the pets included in this set look really good, and the minifigures are great, but that van build? Atrocious. You can't even build the headlights, instead it's either a sticker or a print. Valued at $16... it may be worth picking up just for the figures, but certainly not solely for the van.
